Propects for Career Advancement

The work of data engineers vary depending on the size of the organization. Generalists often work with small teams. They are responsible for every step of the data process, from management to analysis. Working as a generalist is recommended if you want to transition from data science to data engineering. On the other hand, for mid-size companies, data engineers work alongside data scientists to help make sense of the data they collect. They need in-depth knowledge of distributed systems and computer science. Lastly, larger organizations focus more on managing the flow of data full-time. They mainly focus on analytic databases.

Advancing your career as a data engineer would require certifications such as CP Data Engineer from Cloudera, IBM Certified Data Engineer, Google Certified Professional, and/or earning a master’s or doctorate’s degree in computer science or computer engineering. Data engineers may also move into managerial roles or become a data architect, solutions architect or machine learning engineer.
