More than 80,000 jobseekers registered during the 2021 Labor Day Job Fair organized by the Department from 01-05 May 2021, according to Labor Assistant Secretary and Concurrent BLE Director Dominique Rubia-Tutay. This, alongside pertinent information on the Department’s Labor Day initiatives, such as Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan and the National Employment Recovery Strategy, were shared to viewers of Konsyumer ATBP on Super Radyo DZBB last 8 May 2021.
From the initial number of registrants, Asec. Rubia-Tutay reported that around 30,000 applicants met the existing qualification standards of the registered companies. Of these, around 4,500 were considered near-hires and 3,970 were Hired on the Spot (HOTS).
The Department finds the figures encouraging. There were concerns that conducting the annual event online would yield a low turn-out but this proved not to be the case. Jobseekers turned up virtually, by the thousands, for the opportunity to find employment safe in their homes during the pandemic.
Asec. Rubia-Tutay outlined initial developments of the Technical Working Group on Mission Critical Skills relative to the national stock of nurses versus the demand at the global level. The Technical Working Group is composed of representatives from DOLE, POEA, OWWA, PRC, and CHED and is tasked to formulate specific measures for Philippine industries to retain mission critical skills, and thus, boost the country’s competitiveness.
She also conveyed the Department’s positive outlook given the promising results of the March 2021 Labor Force Survey, and detailed the 8-Point Employment Recovery Agenda of the National Employment Recovery Strategy recently launched during the Labor Day Job Summit. For returning OFWs, she shared that DTI and OWWA have forged a partnership on entrepreneurship retooling/upskilling aside from livelihood opportunities being offered by OWWA and NRCO.
She encouraged job seekers to not waver from their perseverance and take hold of the opportunities the government is offering as we recover towards the new normal. “Alalahanin po ng ating jobseekers na sa panahon ngayon, maging open po tayo sa upskilling and reskilling kasi nga iba-iba na po ang mga trabaho na ino-offer ng ating mga employers. Huwag po tayong mag-stick sa ating nakasanayang mga skills but be open po sa mga skills po nang maging employable po tayo.”
“Konsyumer Atbp.” (KATBP) is anchored by Joel Reyes Zobel with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Ruth Castelo and serves as the DTI’s consumer education radio program on timely and informative discussions on pressing consumer-related programs and issues. These include consumer rights and responsibilities, information about prices and supplies of basic goods, product standards and qualities, regular market monitoring, and consumer complaints.
